The Family Tree Maker is genealogical software for Windows and Mac that allows researchers to keep track of data gathered throughout their research and create reports, charts, and booklets. The program enables the user to connect with others researching the same family lines, download family trees created by others into their tree, merge information with their tree, and upload a tree for others to see. As of 2014, FTM was one of two major genealogy programs available for Windows or Mac.
FTM has been a well-known family history program for many years, and millions of people have used it to record their family history. Sadly, on 29 January 2016, Ancestry.com announced that a new version of the FTM would be available. The announcement was followed on 1 April 2016 by the news that FTM 2012 was no longer available for purchase from Ancestry.
The reasons why ancestry wanted a new version of their family tree software are as follows;
Ancestry.com stated that most people preferred to create and share their family stories online. Because of that, they intended to make it easier for their clients to research their family history, develop their family tree and share their stories online through Ancestry.com. Now they have decided to phase out Family Tree Maker because of factors such as;
Cost – developing a desktop program like FTM was prohibitive. Ancestry.com could focus its development costs on its more profitable online offerings by phasing out support for Family Tree Maker.
Competition – in the past few years, many new desktop programs and mobile apps have been released that allow you to record your family history offline. So they had to make improvements to beat their competitors.
